After-school Program 2019-2020 School Year

Hello parents,

The new school year is around the corner and we would like to let you know that our afterschool program is changing. We will no longer have the LEAP program at YMS. Our new program is R.I.S.E. (Responsibility, Initiative, Success, and Empowerment) It will operate in much the same way as LEAP has, with homework help and extracurricular activities. It will operate during the same time: 2:30 - 5:30, Mon-Thurs, beginning 8/27.

Here are the changes:

The new program will offer small group (15:1) tutoring in Math and ELA. Tutors will pull student's grades and assignments weekly. They will work with students to make sure they are turning assignments in on time, passing tests, keeping their grades up, and have an understanding of the curriculum they are being taught during the day. Students will also have the opportunity to attend tutoring with their day teachers during the program, from 2:30 - 3 depending on teacher availability.  This will be scheduled independently.

These program changes are county-wide. Each middle school will offer extracurricular activities that are catered to them. However, there will be activities throughout the year that all middle schools will offer

and they will be taught by the same teacher at all 3 schools. These activities are:

  • Cooking

  • Flag Football / Dodgeball

  • Debate

  • Drama/Improv

  • Art

  • STEP/Dance

During the year R.I.S.E. students will have the opportunity to participate in county wide middle school competitions for these activities. The cooking competition will be hosted by a local Walton County restaurant and judged by local chefs. The flag football tournament will be held in the off season, so that those students who play football for YMS will still have an opportunity to participate. Debate and drama will be sponsored and judged by local talent as well.

In addition to these collective activities, YMS R.I.S.E. will also offer STEM, DIY, FCS, 4-H, Life Skills, and many more activities that will change throughout the year to keep our students engaged!
