Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers
After-school Program 2019-2020 School Year
The Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Center's RISE program is a federally funded after school program. The goals are to support and increase student learning by providing daily academic support and engaging enrichment activities outside of regular school hours. Program hours are 2:30-5:30pm, Monday-Thursday during the school year. There is also a summer program in June. Students must register for RISE and spots are limited, so students may be placed on a waiting list. You will be informed of your student's status. We partner with the community, and volunteers are a vital part of our program. We also encourage families to participate during family events throughout the year!
The program provides small group learning in math and ELA. Tutors pull student grades and assignments weekly. They work with students on missing assignments, homework help and test preparation. Staff connect with day teachers regularly to further understand student needs. In addition to academic support, students participate in extracurricular enrichment activities such as dance, flag football, dodgeball, debate club, drama/improv, art, step/dance.
Students will have opportunities to participate in middle school competitions. Cooking Competitions will be hosted by local restaurants and judged by local chefs. Flag Football tournaments will be held in the off-season so that those who play football will be able to participate. Debate Club and Drama Performances will be led and judged by local talent as well. YMS RISE will also offer STEM, DIY, FCS, 4-H, Life Skills and much more to keep students engaged in great activities!
If you are interested in applying for RISE, please contact me or pick up an application from the front office. Please remember spots are limited and you will be informed regarding acceptance. The program is FREE and bus transportation is available!
