Walker Park Idol

APPLICATION INFORMATION:
WPES IDOL is a solo singing competition fundraiser judged by both the audience and a panel of judges. This competition is open to all 3rd, 4th and 5th grade WPES students. The event usually takes place in February or March in the Walker Park cafeteria. Application forms will be available in November or December. The application form must be turned in with a copy of the song lyrics for approval by Mr. Weese.

AUDITION DETAILS:
Applicants must audition after school on the specified days in the music room. Each audition slot will be approximately 2-3 minutes long. The purpose of the audition will be to choose the top 16 contestants and for me to offer singing advice.

SOLOS, DUETS, TRIOS:
This competition is really designed to be a solo competition. However, duets and trios will be accepted as entries. Judging will be an average of each student’s performance and if the entry wins a trophy, only one (1) trophy will be given.

ACCOMPANIMENT OPTIONS:
You can sing with or without a “karaoke”-type CD. You may accompany yourself, such as playing the guitar, while singing, though only your singing ability will be judged. Please bring whatever accompaniment you plan to sing to (CD, your guitar, etc) to the audition. You can find “karaoke”-type tracks online, such as iTunes.com and Amazon.com.

APPROPRIATE SONG LYRICS:
Any style or genre of music will be accepted. Please use good taste when selecting the content of your piece. Students will be disqualified if they choose a piece unsuitable for elementary students. Mr. Weese has the final decision on what is and is not acceptable. See below for a list of songs that have been previously approved from years past.

DRESS REHEARSAL:
Finalists have the option of singing in the cafeteria with a microphone a few days before the competition. A signup sheet will be made. Please arrange for a ride home.

COMPETITION NIGHT:
Costumes are optional. Movement/dancing is optional. The program will last approximately 2 hours.

ADMISSION / FUNDRAISER:
$2 per person
$1 for non-competing WPES students
FREE - Idol contestants
FREE - Children under 5 years old

AUDIENCE VOTING:
The audience votes for their favorite contestant by purchasing “vote” tickets for 50¢ each. All proceeds will benefit the WPES music program.

SHOE BOX VOTING CONTAINERS:
Contestants will be responsible for locating a shoe box and decorating it for the evening of the contest. Contestants may decorate it however he or she wants (glitter, objects, pictures, etc).

JUDGING CRITERIA:
Five areas will be given a score of 0 – 4. The five areas are Stage Presence, Preparation, Intonation (singing in tune with the track), Diction (clarity of words) and Tone (quality of vocal sound).
