Chorus

When?
Tuesday & Thursday mornings, 7:45-8:25 a.m.
Fall: September-December
Spring: February-May
If your student rides the bus and arrives at school AFTER 7:45 a.m. then they will need to be a car rider on chorus days so they are not tardy.

Can I join Chorus if I have morning Safety Patrol duties?
Yes! If you are an afterschool Safety Patrol then there is no conflict. If you have Safety Patrol in the morning you are allowed to miss 1 morning of Safety Patrol (either Tuesday or Thursday) to attend Chorus that morning.

Who may join?
All 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. No audition necessary.

Where?
WPES Music Room

Early Dropoff?
No earlier than 7:30 a.m. Students must be walked to the front door of the school. They will be allowed to work on homework or read. I will have assortment of music worksheets they can work on while we wait for chorus to start. Unsupervised playing of instruments will not be allowed.

What is required?
  1. Attendance
  2. Willingness to learn
  3. Behave appropriately!
Be on time to every rehearsal. Attendance is very important. Missing ONE rehearsal each month (about 1 out of 8) would give you a grade of 88%! That’s a “B”… not bad, but not an “A.” We have about 20-25 rehearsals before each performance. If you are absent more than 3 times (unexcused) you may not be allowed to sing in our Winter Concert. (Five tardies, arriving after 7:50 = 1 absence) You may rejoin the Chorus during the next enrollment time, either fall or spring.

What if I decide not to continue in chorus?
Just as in any number of clubs you could be a part of, commitment to attendance is required. Please tell Mr. Weese if you choose to drop chorus at any time; this is the respectful and "grown-up" thing to do.

What will we be doing?
Well...sing, of course! We will have two main performances (fall and spring) and a couple of smaller times to sing at school events, such as the Hero Breakfast in September and the Drug Free Rally in October. As we work towards the performances, we will learn how to better ourselves as musicians, by singing properly and with expression. In chorus, we sing many types of songs, including songs from many different cultures and styles. We will also sing several partner songs (2 different songs that can be sung at the same time) and songs with harmony. Occasionally we will learn a song that includes the use of instruments: recorders, Boomwhackers, other percussion instruments, etc...

Is there a dress code?
Performance dress code depends on the event. For most events we will wear blue jeans and color-coordinating shirts. Closed-toe shoes are a must; flop-flops and sandals are a safety issue when standing on choral risers.
  • Hero Breakfast – Patriotic, red, white and blue.
  • Red Ribbon Rally – Red shirts
  • Nursing Home Visits
  • December Performance – Christmasy colors. If other costumes are needed we will notify ASAP to give plenty of time to find.
  • Spring Performance - Costumes and clothing choices will depend on the program topic.
How much does it cost?
Chorus is FREE, except for the chorus polo if you choose to purchase one through the school. Though chorus is free, it does take funds to pay for music, etc so students may be expected to participate and help in fundraisers (such as helping packing used printer cartridges to be sent).

What do I need to do to join WPES Chorus?
Fill out the application form and turn it in to Mr. Weese as soon as possible.

Questions?
Email is usually the best way of getting a hold of me. I will send out periodic emails to all choir members about upcoming events and info. My school email is: [email protected].
