School EmPOWERment Grants

Through the 2018 Walton EMC School EmPOWERment Grant program, the Walton County School District received over $120,000 for various projects including literacy, technology, Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS), playgrounds and more.

Walton EMC’s grant program is fully funded by unclaimed capital credit refunds. Capital credits represent the money remaining after Walton EMC pays its operational bills. Remaining funds are returned to customer-owners; however, some of those refunds go unclaimed by former customer-owners who move off the cooperative’s electric grid. After all attempts are exhausted to find the owners, Georgia law allows for the money to be used for community development projects.

For the past three years, Walton EMC has generously donated over $1 million to various schools throughout their 10-county service area. This year’s round of awards saw 60 schools receive 85 grants worth $372,193. Fourteen WCSD schools received 22 grants worth $120,124.46.
