CMS will conduct annual Scoliosis screenings at the end of January 2024 for all 6th and 8th grade students. Screenings are required in public schools by the Georgia Department of Public Health. Parents/guardians may choose to have their child screened by a licensed medical provider or may opt out of the school screening by filling out Form #400 (linked below). If Form #4400 is not returned to CMS before screenings begin, your child will be screened for scoliosis.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to get in touch with Nurse Wright at [email protected].
What is Scoliosis? Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. It can occur at any age but is often noticeable between the ages of 9 and 16, when growth occurs rapidly. Early detection is important to avoid potentially serious problems later in life if a spinal curve is not recognized, treated, and it continues to progress.
How are student screened? The screening test is an observation of the child’s back when standing and bending forward.
