In addition to keeping students, teachers and families safe during this time, the Walton County School District’s top priority remains keeping students engaged in learning.
“Whether in our buildings or at home, we value our role in educating the students of Walton County,” said Superintendent Nathan Franklin. “We have undergone some drastic changes both as a school district and as a community over the last month and appreciate our students, teachers, staff and parents for adapting quickly to support learning at home.”
In order to serve students through the remainder of the academic year, teachers will continue posting new assignments through May 8. This will give students two weeks before the end of the school year to complete any assignments made prior to May 8 and receive additional support in specific subject areas where needed. All teachers and staff will continue to support students and parents online through May 21.
Following guidance from the Georgia Department of Education, a student’s overall grade will not be negatively impacted by work assigned during the closure; however, students do have opportunities to improve their grades by completing work during this time. Final year end grades will be the March 12 progress grade or higher. There will be no state testing administered this semester.
Schools will provide additional information regarding end of year events, Chromebook returns, item pickups and more as soon as final dates and times have been set.
Franklin continued, “Our staff understands the significance of a traditional high school graduation ceremony and are going to do everything we possibly can to honor the Class of 2020 in this manner.”
If the district cannot hold the May ceremonies as planned, alternative dates for June 18, 19, 20 and July 16, 17, 18 have been set with Monroe Area being first, followed by Loganville and then Walnut Grove. Ceremonies held in June or July will be scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
Parents are encouraged to contact their school administrators or teachers via email for more information on grading, student performance and other school related questions.
