IMPORTANT NOTE: All persons registering their child for LEAP MUST attend a MANDATORY Parent/Guardian Orientation. Please contact the LEAP Site Coordinator for upcoming dates and times. Submitting a registration form DOES NOT guaranteed acceptance into the 21st CCLC-LEAP program.
WHAT IS LEAP?
LEAP stands for LEARNING, ENRICHMENT, & ACADEMIC PROGRESS. It is a federally funded after school program within the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC). LEAP is designed to increase academic performance, improve student engagement and behavior, and offer families of participating students literacy-based opportunities. We strongly encourage families to participate in their child’s learning and offer parent events throughout the school year.
WHY IS 21ST CCLC INVOLVED?
21st CCLC is part of the NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT of 2001. 21st CCLC became part of this act in 2003. LEAP offers academic, artistic, recreational and cultural enrichment opportunities to students and their family at times when school is not in session (such as after school hours and during the summer). The primary goal is to supplement the education of children to help them meet state core curriculum content standards while providing a safe place for students to learn during after school hours. Involvement with 21st CCLC also includes Mentoring, Academic Grade Counseling, BackPack Buddies, Field Trips, Career Exploration, Personal Development Programs and other activities. We partner with community partners such as CIS (Communities in Schools) and volunteers, who are a vital part of our program.
WHO IS ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE?
Any student in grades 6, 7 and 8 is eligible. Slots are limited so a selection process will be used including teacher recommendation, behavior and academic record, and test scores. A Waiting List is kept when the program reaches the maximum number and students from that list are contacted when openings occur. Parents must register and agree to the policies and regulations of the program or students will not be accepted. Students may be dropped from the program for non-compliance.
WHEN IS LEAP OFFERED?
The program operates every Monday through Thursday for 120 days during the school year. There is no LEAP on Fridays. The hours are from the time of school dismissal (@ 2:30pm) until 5:30pm.
WHAT IS THE STUDENT’S DAILY LEAP SCHEDULE LIKE?
Students will be provided a nutritious SNACK at the beginning of each day. A GAMES/RECREATION time is provided to allow exercise and social development. Academic Enrichment is provided mainly in READING/ELA and MATH but assistance is also given with HOMEWORK HELP, SMALL GROUP TUTORING and TEST PREPARATION in other subjects.
IS TRANSPORTATION AVAILABLE?
Yes! Transportation home will be provided by Walton County School Bus or parents may pick up children at the end of the program.
Additional information can be found on Walton County School District’s main webpage.
