GSBA Recognition
The Walton County Board of Education has once again been recognized by the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) as an Exemplary SchoolBoard Chairman Tom Gibson pictured with GSBA Executive Director Valarie Wilson Board. Less than 20 percent of school boards in Georgia received this prestigious honor at the annual GSBA conference.

“I commend our board on this outstanding accomplishment and appreciate their continued support of our students and our community,” said Superintendent Nathan Franklin. “Reaching this level of governance requires a lot of time, planning and training. Without the exemplary leadership of our board members, our district would not be able to function as efficiently. We are truly grateful for their commitment to pursuing excellence.”

The Georgia Board of Education developed state standards for governance that formed the foundation for GSBA’s tiered awards and recognition program. The program provides additional ways for school boards to increase their effectiveness. Exemplary status is the highest level of distinction and requires boards to meet several criteria, such as providing evidence of a system strategic plan, demonstrating accreditation compliance and exceeding the minimum training requirements. Each year, since the inception of GSBA’s awards and recognition program, the Walton County Board of Education has received the highest level of recognition possible.

“We are very proud to have received the highest level of recognition from GSBA for the third time,” said Board Chairman Tom Gibson. “This recognition is the result of a lot of hard work by all of my fellow board members. I want to specifically thank them for their diligence in pursuing excellence and focus on making the Walton County School District the best district for our students and community. We are blessed with great teachers, administrators, staff and one of the hardest working superintendents in the state of Georgia.”

The GSBA Governance Team Recognition Program was developed by Georgia superintendents and board members based on the state board of education’s standards for effective governance to recognize exemplary leadership. In 1998, GSBA was one of the first school board associations in the nation to develop a program of standards for local boards of education.
