Second Step

Second Step: A Violence Prevention Program

Elementary School is a time of tremendous learning and growth. PreK - 2nd grade students are learning to read, starting to write, tying shoelaces, trying to help out at home, and wanting to do things by themselves. 3rd - 5th grade students may be reading chapter books, writing stories, using graphs, or starting to play a musical instrument. While these are important skills for young children, children are also learning how to understand and manage their feelings, such as: how to make a friend, be a friend, and solve problems with other children. Children are learning by watching and listening to how teachers, family members, and friends interact with each other. Just like reading and writing, these skills have to be taught.
We will be using a program called Second Step: A Violence Prevention Program to teach and practice using these social-emotional skills. Children who learn and use these skills are more likely to get along with other people and do better in school.
